TMRW - Cycling/Walking on WCPN 90.3 from 9 to 10am

In This Issue:

Public parks: Most people don't realize it, but in our two biggest parks (Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Cleveland MetroParks) mountain biking is illegal.  Citizens caught mountain biking face a fine of approximately $200 for the first offense and confiscation of their bicycle for a second offense.  Mountain biking became an official Olympic sport in 1996 and Cleveland has the world's only indoor mountain bike park, yet it is illegal to ride in our two biggest public parks.   Thousands of volunteers have been working for over ten years to change this...read more at www.camba.us

Schools/Obesity/Asthma: it has been estimated that 30% of morning traffic is parents driving their children short distances to school because they think there is too much traffic to walk or bicycle safely, thus perpetuating the problem.  Additionally, air quality near schools is often much more polluted than we think.  With asthma and obesity rates at record levels, getting kids to walk or bike to school can transform our children while also transforming our communities.  Over the summer, let's come up with ways for our kids to bike and walk more to school.

TMRW - Cycling and Walking on WCPN 90.3 Sound of Ideas: 9 to 10am, Tues June 15

Tuesday June 15, 9 to 10am - WCPN Sound of Ideas with host Dan Moulthrop will include cycling and walking!  Live radio is unpredictable, fast-paced and unscripted...topics are expected to include:

Towpath Trail update - with multiple options, ideas and personalities involved in completing the Towpath Trail from Steelyard Commons into downtown Cleveland and on to Lake Erie, this should be lively a discussion.

Transportation options - former Republican Congressman and current U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has made numerous statements supporting alternative transportation options such as walking, bicycling, trains, buses and trams.  Local Congressman Steve LaTourette sparked a controversy when he commented that LaHood must be on drugs for supporting equal treatment for bicycles and pedestrians.   Congressman LaTourette has since backpedaled and says he supports projects that encourage bicycling and walking, although not with equal funding.  Since bicycling and pedestrian projects get about 1% of transportation funding, even a tiny percentage increase can make a huge difference.

With the six-year Transportation Bill set to expire in September, the U.S. is at a critical point in determining our future...do we continue the status quo of focusing on cars, trucks, highways and urban sprawl or do we focus on alternatives like walking, bicycling, public transit, clean energy, livable communities and schools.  The oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico may be the final wake-up call for Americans to begin ending their love affair with cars.

Tomorrow, Tuesday June 15 from 9am to 10am - listen to WCPN at 90.3.  You can also join the conversation by e-mailing news@wcpn.org or calling 216-578-0903 or 866-578-0903.
