Walk+Roll People Powered Events

Let's Roll

Walk+Roll encourages people to walk and bicycle in their daily lives by:

- Organizing human-powered neighborhood events that combine fun with active living, learning and participating.

- Advocating with politicians and community leaders so that they consider cyclists and pedestrians in public policy.

- Promoting and encouraging biking and walking through press releases and outreach to the media.

Walking and cycling rather than driving - particularly for short distances - saves money, improves physical and emotional health, decreases smog which improves our living environment, improves neighborhood safety and encourages social interaction which builds community.

Bicycling Magazine's BikeTown - Summer 2009 - we will be giving away new bicycles to people in seven cities across the U.S.

The above represent a small fraction of the communities that contacted W+R for help putting on local street-based events. We hope to expand our list of communities in future years by offering consulting and planning assistance to encourage opening streets to people by temporariliy closing streets to cars.

----------------------------------------------------------------

2008 was a very, very busy year! We are extremely grateful for the volunteers who helped make all of these events happen!

Cleveland Bicycle Week - dozens of people helped co-produce the first ever bicycle week in Cleveland.

BikeTown - Bicycling Magazine hired W+R as the field coordinator for their popular BikeTown project where new riders are given bicycles. This year's BikeTown cities were Columbus OH, Lincoln NE, San Francisco CA, Portland OR and Seattle WA. W+R coordinated the events in each city and helped give away almost 200 bicycles which are changing peoples' lives.

Walk+Roll Lakewood - the city of Lakewood got behind the Walk+Roll concept by encouraging residents to bike and walk in their daily lives.

Walk+Roll Cleveland - for the third year, we opened Rockefeller Park and The Cultural Gardens to people by closing MLK Jr Blvd to cars.

Cleveland Police on Bicycles - we raised nearly $6000 to buy bicycle equipment for our officers.

Sparx in the City - with our leadership, a bicycle option was added so people could ride bikes as well as take the trolley. Over 250 temporary "Share the Road" signs were put up to show cyclists the route and to remind motorists that bicycles have a right to the road.

Media, public perception and education - Walk+Roll participated in dozens of Cleveland area community meetings, block club presentations and local events. W+R was also directly involved in approximately 70 minutes of television/radio programming plus over 300 column inches of print media that mentioned walking and bicycling. All of these things help communicate the benefits of bicycling and walking and encourage people to bicycle and walk in the daily lives.

Conferences and networking - we participated in these conferences and events in 2008:

- National Bike Summit in Washington DC

- Active Transportation Conference in Toronto

- Ohio Parks and Recreation Conference in Dayton

- Thunderhead Alliance for Biking and Walking Retreat in Seattle

- Car-Free Cities Conference in Portland, Oregon

- Sunday Parkways in Portland, Oregon

- Summer Streets in New York City

- Streetlife in Munich, Germany

We are looking for inspired, energetic, productive people to serve on the board; if you would like to serve on the board of Walk+Roll, please e-mail Lois Moss or Jim Roosa.
